What It Is

A sump pump is an electric pump installed in a pit - the sump pit - at the lowest point of a basement or crawlspace. It automatically activates when groundwater accumulates in the pit and pumps that water out through a discharge line to a location away from the foundation. It is the primary defense against basement flooding in homes where groundwater, seasonal high water tables, or poor drainage causes water to collect beneath the foundation.

What It Does

Groundwater naturally seeks the lowest available path. Under a house, that path often leads into the basement floor or through foundation walls. A drainage system - perimeter drains, drain tile, or a French drain - channels that water toward the sump pit. When the pit fills to a set level, the float switch activates the pump, which moves the water out through the discharge line before it can reach floor level.

A sump pump runs automatically, often without the homeowner ever noticing. During heavy rain or snowmelt, it may cycle on and off repeatedly. A properly functioning system means a dry basement; a failed or overwhelmed pump means water on the floor.

In Northeast Ohio, spring snowmelt combined with rain events can put significant pressure on basement drainage systems. Homes in low-lying areas or with older perimeter drain systems depend heavily on a reliable sump pump to stay dry.

Where It Is Located

The sump pump sits inside the sump pit - a cylindrical hole, typically 18-24 inches in diameter and 2-3 feet deep, dug into the lowest corner of the basement floor. The pit collects water from the surrounding drain system. The pump motor sits in or just above the water in the pit; the discharge pipe exits through the basement wall or floor above grade level.

How It Works

Most residential sump pumps are submersible pumps - they sit directly in the water in the pit. A float switch monitors water level. When water rises to the activation point, the switch triggers the motor, which spins an impeller that draws water up through the pump body and forces it out through the discharge pipe. As the pit empties, the float drops below the cutoff point and the pump shuts off.

The discharge line includes a check valve that prevents pumped water from draining back into the pit when the pump stops. Without a check valve, the pump would short-cycle - turning on and off rapidly to pump the same water back and forth.

When to Call a Plumber

Call if the pump doesn't activate when tested, if it runs but doesn't empty the pit, if it cycles on and off rapidly in normal conditions, or if the pump is old enough that pre-failure replacement makes sense before the next wet season. A plumber can also evaluate whether the pump is properly sized for the pit inflow rate and whether a battery backup system is appropriate for your situation.
