What It Is
A sump pump float switch is the sensor that monitors water level in the sump pit and automatically turns the pump on when water rises to a set height and off when the pit empties. It is the primary automatic control for the sump pump. Without a functioning float switch, the pump either won't run when needed - leaving the pit to overflow - or won't shut off after the water is gone, burning out the motor.
What It Does
The float switch translates water level into an electrical signal. When water lifts the float to the "on" position, the circuit closes and the pump activates. When the pump empties the pit to the "off" position, the float drops and the circuit opens, shutting the pump down. The entire operation is automatic - no manual intervention required.
The gap between the "on" and "off" water levels determines how much water the pump moves per cycle. A wider gap means longer run times and fewer cycles; a narrower gap means shorter cycles that can wear the motor faster.
Where It Is Located
The float switch is attached to the pump body or mounted on the pump discharge pipe inside the sump pit. In submersible pumps, it typically hangs on a cord that allows it to rise with the water level. Pedestal pumps (where the motor sits above the water on a post) usually have a float arm that extends into the pit.
How It Works
The most common type is the tethered float - a hollow plastic ball on a power cord that floats on the water surface. As water rises, the ball rises with it; when the ball reaches a preset tether angle, it activates the pump. A fixed vertical float uses a different mechanism but achieves the same result. Electronic pressure sensors are used in some newer pumps as an alternative to mechanical floats.
The tethered float can get tangled or pinned against the pit wall, which prevents it from rising with water - the pump never activates. This is a common failure mode, especially in small or round pits where the float has limited room to move.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Pump doesn't turn on despite water in the pit - float stuck in the down position
- Pump runs continuously even when pit is empty - float stuck in the up position
- Pump cycles on and off rapidly - float set point too narrow, or float is responding to wave action in the pit
- Float cord tangled around pump or discharge pipe - prevents normal float movement
Can a Homeowner Check It?
- Open the pit cover and manually lift the float - the pump should activate immediately. If it doesn't, the motor or power supply has a problem independent of the float.
- Check that the float cord is not wrapped around the pump or pinned against the pit wall. Untangle it so the float hangs freely.
- Pour water into the pit to test automatic activation - the pump should turn on as water rises and shut off as the pit empties.
- If the float activates the pump manually but the pump won't turn on automatically, the float mechanism itself may need replacement.
When to Call a Plumber
A float switch replacement is a relatively minor repair - the switch alone can be replaced on many submersible pumps without replacing the entire unit. If manual testing shows the motor runs but the float isn't triggering it, a plumber can replace just the switch. If the motor doesn't respond to manual activation, the issue is the motor or power supply and may require a full pump replacement.
