What It Is
A sump pit - also called a sump basin or sump crock - is the excavated hole in the basement floor that collects groundwater from the surrounding drain system and holds it until the sump pump removes it. It is typically lined with a perforated or solid plastic or concrete basin to prevent soil from collapsing into the hole and to define the volume the pump must manage. The sump pump sits inside the pit.
What It Does
The sump pit is the collection point for the entire basement drainage system. Perimeter drain tile or weeping tile installed around the basement footing routes groundwater toward the pit. Water entering the pit rises until the float switch on the pump reaches its activation point, at which point the pump moves the water out through the discharge line.
The pit's volume provides a buffer. Without it, even a small inflow of water would immediately trigger the pump, causing rapid short-cycling. A properly sized pit allows a few gallons to accumulate before each pump cycle, which extends the motor's life and reduces wear.
Where It Is Located
The sump pit is at the lowest point of the basement floor - often in a corner. It is typically about 18-24 inches in diameter and 24-36 inches deep. A plastic or concrete liner holds the excavation open. The pit has a removable cover - either an open grate or a sealed lid (sealed lids reduce radon and humidity in the basement).
How It Works
Groundwater seeping through the foundation gravel and drain tile flows toward the pit by gravity - the pit is the lowest point in the system. Water enters through perforations in the pit liner or through the open bottom. The pump's float switch monitors water level; when water rises to the set point, the pump activates and removes the water.
Pit size matters. A pit that is too small fills too quickly and causes the pump to cycle on and off rapidly - wearing out the motor. A pit that is too large may allow water to sit long enough to become stagnant or cause concerns about pump activation timing.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Pump short-cycling (running every few minutes) - pit may be too small for the inflow rate
- Sump pump running continuously - inflow may exceed pump capacity, or the pit is overwhelmed
- Pit filling with silt or debris - perforated liner without a gravel bed can allow fines to enter over time
- Cracked or collapsed pit liner - less common in newer plastic basins, more common in older clay or concrete crocks
- Musty odor from the pit - normal if there is standing water, but excessive with stagnant water and organic debris
Can a Homeowner Check It?
- Remove the pit cover and look inside. The pump should be visible, the float should move freely, and the water level when the pump is at rest should be several inches below the pump activation point.
- Check for debris or silt accumulation on the pit bottom - clear any significant buildup that could interfere with the pump intake.
- Note how frequently the pump cycles during rain. Very frequent cycling (every few minutes) during moderate rain suggests either a high inflow rate or a pit that is undersized.
- A sealed lid reduces humidity and radon entry into the basement - if your pit has an open grate, a sealed cover is an easy upgrade.
When to Call a Plumber
Call if the pump is short-cycling severely, if the pit liner appears cracked or damaged, or if you're seeing water in the basement despite the pump running. A plumber can assess whether the pit is appropriately sized for your water table conditions and whether the drain tile feeding the pit is functioning properly.
