What It Is

Galvanized pipe is steel pipe coated with a layer of zinc to slow corrosion. It was the standard water supply pipe material in American homes from roughly the 1880s to the 1960s, when copper became dominant. The zinc layer provides initial protection, but once it depletes - which takes decades - the underlying steel is exposed to water and begins to rust from the inside out. A galvanized pipe system in a pre-1960s home is likely 60 to 80 or more years old, and the interior condition is usually poor.

What It Does

Galvanized supply pipes carry hot and cold water under pressure from the main shutoff to fixtures. When new, they work as well as any other supply pipe. As they age, internal corrosion produces two compounding problems: rust deposits flake off and discolor the water, and progressive buildup of rust and scale on the interior wall gradually reduces the pipe's effective diameter. A severely corroded galvanized pipe may have its usable interior reduced to a fraction of its original bore, dramatically cutting flow and pressure.

Where It Is Located

In homes built before 1960, galvanized pipes may run throughout the supply system - from the service line entrance through the basement and up through the walls to every fixture. In homes that have been partially renovated, you might find galvanized pipes in older sections and copper or PEX in newer additions. The transition points between galvanized and copper are particularly important: galvanic corrosion accelerates at the junction of dissimilar metals unless a dielectric union is used.

How It Works (and Fails)

The zinc coating on galvanized pipe slowly dissolves in the presence of water over decades. Once the zinc is consumed at any point, the steel underneath oxidizes - forming iron oxide (rust). The rust accumulates on the interior walls, creating a rough surface that traps more rust and scale with each passing year. The buildup is progressive: a pipe that is slightly restricted at 40 years may be nearly blocked at 70 years. Hot water pipes corrode faster because heat accelerates the oxidation reaction.

When to Call a Plumber

Call a plumber if you have discolored water, significantly reduced pressure, or a home that still has its original galvanized supply pipes. A plumber can assess the extent of corrosion, test flow rates, and recommend either targeted replacement of the worst sections or full repiping. Full repiping with PEX is typically the most cost-effective long-term solution for a home that still has most of its original galvanized supply system.
