What It Is
Scale and mineral buildup is the accumulation of calcium carbonate, magnesium, and other dissolved minerals on the interior surfaces of pipes, water heaters, and fixtures. It forms when hard water is heated or sits still, precipitating minerals out of solution. Over time, scale narrows pipe openings, reduces heat transfer in water heaters, and clogs fixture aerators and showerheads. The white or tan crusty deposits visible around faucets and showerheads are a surface manifestation of the same process happening inside the plumbing.
What It Does
In pipes, scale gradually reduces the interior diameter, which increases flow resistance and reduces pressure at fixtures. In water heaters, scale settles on the tank floor and on electric heating elements. A layer of scale on an electric element acts as insulation, forcing it to run hotter and longer to heat the same amount of water. This shortens element life and increases energy consumption. Scale inside tank-style heaters also causes the popping or rumbling sound homeowners hear during the heating cycle - steam bubbles escaping through a scale layer.
At fixtures, mineral deposits clog showerhead nozzles and faucet aerators. This is often the first noticeable sign that buildup is occurring. Scale also affects appliances: dishwashers, washing machines, and coffee makers all show reduced efficiency and lifespan in hard water areas without treatment.
How It Works
Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium ions. At cold temperatures, these remain in solution. When water is heated or when the water evaporates, the dissolved minerals precipitate and bond to whatever surface is present. The higher the water temperature, the faster scale deposits. This is why water heaters and hot water pipes accumulate scale faster than cold water lines.
Northeast Ohio's water supply has moderate to high hardness levels, which means scale buildup is a common and ongoing maintenance issue rather than an exception.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- White or tan crusty deposits around faucet bases, showerheads, and drain openings
- Reduced flow from showerheads - nozzles clogged with scale
- Water heater making popping or rumbling sounds during heating cycles
- Water heater taking longer to recover than it used to
- Reduced pressure at a single fixture (aerator clogged) vs. all fixtures (pipe restriction)
- Shorter appliance lifespan for dishwashers, washing machines, or tankless heaters
Can a Homeowner Check It?
- Unscrew and inspect faucet aerators - calcium deposits appear as white or tan crumbles inside the screen
- Remove and soak a showerhead in white vinegar for 1-2 hours - if it significantly improves flow, scale was the cause
- Check the bottom of any kettle or electric tea pot you use - visible scale indicates the hardness of your water supply
- Ask your water utility for a recent water quality report - hardness is expressed in grains per gallon (GPG) or mg/L
When to Call a Plumber
Call a plumber if pressure loss is affecting multiple fixtures simultaneously (suggesting pipe-scale restriction rather than a clogged aerator), if your water heater is making noise and hasn't been flushed recently, or if you want to evaluate water softening or filtration options. A plumber can flush the water heater to remove sediment, and advise on whether a whole-house softener is appropriate for your hardness level and pipe condition.
