What It Is
Copper pipe is a thin-walled metal tubing used for water supply lines. Sections are joined with sweat-soldered fittings or press-fit connections. It has been the dominant residential supply pipe material in North America since the 1950s because it resists corrosion in most water conditions, handles high temperatures, and carries a long service life - copper systems regularly last 50 years or more with no maintenance. Type L (medium wall) is the most common residential grade; Type K (thick wall) is used for underground service lines.
What It Does
Copper supply lines carry pressurized hot and cold water from the main shutoff to every fixture and appliance. The rigid nature of copper makes it dimensionally stable and predictable. It doesn't expand much with heat, doesn't require UV protection, and can be used for gas lines in some configurations. Copper is also naturally antimicrobial - bacteria don't colonize copper surfaces the way they can on some other materials.
How It Works
Copper pipe sections are cut to length and joined with fittings - elbows, tees, couplings - using sweat soldering (heating with a torch and flowing lead-free solder into the joint) or press-fit fittings (no heat required). The resulting joints are strong and leak-resistant when done correctly. Copper is rigid and must be routed around corners with fittings, unlike PEX which bends in place.
Copper develops a protective patina of copper oxide on its exterior over time, which generally protects it from further corrosion. On the interior, water chemistry is the main variable. Soft, acidic water (low pH) can dissolve copper slowly - leading to blue-green staining at fixtures and eventually pinhole leaks. Hard water, by contrast, may actually deposit a thin protective layer of calcium on the interior of copper pipes.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Pinhole leaks - the most common copper failure mode, especially in acidic water or older thin-wall (Type M) pipe
- Blue-green staining at fixtures - copper dissolved in water and deposited at drains and aerators
- Corrosion at joints - can occur where dissimilar metals connect without dielectric unions
- Split pipes from freezing - copper is less forgiving than PEX when water freezes and expands inside
- Mineral scale buildup on the interior - less than galvanized, but still occurs in hard water areas
Can a Homeowner Check It?
- Inspect exposed copper runs in the basement for green or blue-green patina, pitting, or white mineral deposits
- Check solder joints at fittings for discoloration or any sign of previous dampness (mineral staining)
- Look at faucet drains for blue-green staining that might indicate copper corrosion
- Ask when the copper was installed - pipes from before 1986 may have been joined with lead-based solder
When to Call a Plumber
Call a plumber for any pinhole leak in copper pipe. Pinhole leaks often signal that the water chemistry is corroding the pipes from within, and one pinhole is frequently followed by others in the same section. A plumber can assess whether a targeted repair or a partial or full repipe with PEX is the better long-term option, based on the condition of the existing copper and the water chemistry.
