What It Is

A battery backup sump pump is a secondary pump installed in the sump pit that runs on a rechargeable DC battery when the primary pump loses power or fails. It activates automatically when water rises above the primary pump's float switch, providing continued protection during storms that knock out electricity - exactly the kind of storms that generate the most groundwater in the first place.

What It Does

The battery backup pump has one job: take over when the primary pump can't. During heavy rain, storm surges can overwhelm a single pump or trip a circuit breaker. A battery backup unit monitors the water level independently and activates the moment water climbs past the primary float's activation point.

Most battery backup systems can pump several thousand gallons on a single charge - enough to handle a multi-hour outage during a significant storm. Some models also include an alarm that sounds if the water level gets too high or the battery is running low.

A few battery backup systems are built into a combination unit - one housing with both the primary and backup pumps. Others are add-on units installed alongside the existing primary pump, using the same discharge pipe or a parallel one.

Where It Is Located

The backup pump sits inside the sump pit, usually positioned slightly higher than the primary pump or beside it. Its float switch is set to activate at a higher water level than the primary, so it only kicks in when the primary can't keep up. The battery itself - typically a sealed lead-acid unit - sits nearby on a shelf or pedestal outside the pit, connected by low-voltage wiring.

How It Works

When grid power is available, the battery stays on a trickle charger to maintain its charge. When power fails or the primary pump is overwhelmed, the backup's float switch rises with the water level and triggers the DC motor. The pump then moves water through the discharge pipe (same or parallel line) and outside the home. When the water level drops, the float lowers and the pump shuts off automatically.

Battery backup pumps typically use a 12-volt deep-cycle battery, similar to a marine or RV battery. The battery needs periodic replacement - usually every 3 to 5 years - to remain reliable.

When to Call a Plumber

Call if the unit won't activate during a test, the alarm won't silence after the water level drops, or the pump runs but water isn't being moved. A plumber can also help size the right backup system for your pit volume and typical groundwater load - not all backup pumps are equal in capacity. If your primary pump is failing regularly and the backup is being used as a primary, that's a sign the entire system needs evaluation.
