What It Is
A sump pump alarm is a high-water sensor installed in the sump pit that sounds an audible alert when the water level rises above the normal operating range. It signals that the primary pump is not keeping up with incoming water, has failed, or has lost power, giving homeowners time to respond before water overflows the pit and reaches the basement floor.
What It Does
The alarm monitors water level independently of the pump. When the float or probe sensor detects water at or above a set threshold, it triggers a loud beep or continuous tone. Some systems also send alerts to a smartphone app or call a monitoring service. The purpose is early warning - not to fix the problem, but to buy time.
In homes with a battery backup pump, the alarm may also indicate that the backup is actively running, which means the primary pump has stopped working. In that case, the backup is doing its job, but the primary still needs attention.
Where It Is Located
Alarm sensors sit in the sump pit, mounted to the side of the pit wall or on a bracket just above the pump's float switch activation point. The alarm unit itself - with its speaker or buzzer - is usually mounted on a nearby wall or the top of the pit cover, where it can be heard throughout the basement.
How It Works
Most sump pump alarms use a simple float sensor: a small float connected by a wire that rises with the water level. When the float reaches the trigger height, it completes an electrical circuit that activates the alarm. Others use electronic probe sensors - two metal contacts mounted at the trigger height that complete a circuit when submerged. Battery-powered alarms operate independently of AC power, which is important because power outages often coincide with the heavy rain events that stress sump systems most.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Alarm sounds continuously with no visible water in the pit - float is stuck in the raised position
- Alarm never sounds even during heavy rain - sensor may be disconnected or battery is dead
- Alarm sounds but pump is running normally - the pump is running but can't keep up with water volume
- Intermittent beeping during dry periods - moisture or humidity may be triggering a probe sensor
- Alarm sounds and pump is silent - pump has lost power or failed
Can a Homeowner Check It?
- If battery-powered, test the battery by pressing the test button - should produce a full-volume tone
- Manually raise the float sensor to confirm the alarm activates
- Check that the sensor is positioned at the correct height above the pump float (a few inches higher)
- During dry conditions, check for debris or mineral buildup on the probe contacts
- Verify the alarm unit is plugged in or has fresh batteries
When to Call a Plumber
When the alarm sounds during an active rain event, check the pit immediately. If water is high and the pump is not running, call a plumber or emergency plumbing service. If the alarm sounds and the backup pump is running, the backup bought you time, but the primary pump failure still needs to be addressed. A plumber can diagnose whether the primary pump failed, was overwhelmed, or lost power, and recommend the right solution.
