What It Is
A ball valve is a shutoff valve that uses a hollow sphere with a bore drilled through its center to start or stop water flow. A lever handle attached to the sphere rotates it 90 degrees. When the lever is parallel to the pipe, the bore aligns with the pipe and water flows through freely. When the lever is perpendicular to the pipe, the solid sides of the sphere block flow completely. Ball valves are the most common and reliable type of shutoff in modern residential plumbing.
What It Does
Ball valves give homeowners and plumbers a fast, reliable way to isolate any section of the water supply. The quarter-turn operation means shutting off a water line takes one second rather than several turns of a wheel-style valve. This speed matters most in an emergency - a burst pipe or a failing appliance connection where every second of water flow causes more damage.
Ball valves are used at the main water shutoff where the supply enters the house, on branch lines serving different areas, at water heater connections, at outdoor hose bibs, and at appliance supply lines. Wherever water needs to be isolated for repair or replacement, a ball valve is the preferred control.
Where It Is Located
Common locations include: the main shutoff valve typically near where the water supply enters the basement or utility room; behind the water heater on both supply and cold inlet lines; on the cold inlet above the water softener; inline on any branch line that feeds a bathroom, laundry, or kitchen; and at any isolation point a plumber has installed for service convenience.
How It Works
Inside the valve body, a hollow brass or stainless steel ball sits between rubber seats. The bore through the ball matches the pipe diameter, creating a full-bore path when open. The lever connects to a stem that passes through a seal to the outside, so turning the handle rotates the internal ball. The rubber seats press against the ball surface on both sides, creating a watertight seal when closed.
Unlike gate valves, which use a threaded gate that descends into the flow path, ball valves do not rely on soft packing that degrades over time. They can sit unused for years and still operate cleanly when needed - a significant advantage for emergency shutoff valves that may go untouched for decades.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Valve body dripping at the stem - the packing nut may need tightening or the valve needs replacement
- Handle moves but water does not fully stop - internal ball or seats are worn
- Lever handle stuck and will not turn - often mineral scale buildup, especially with hard water
- Valve leaks at a threaded joint - connection to pipe is failing, not the valve itself
- Cracked valve body - usually from freezing in unprotected outdoor or unheated locations
Can a Homeowner Check It?
- Locate your main shutoff ball valve and confirm its position - handle parallel to pipe means open
- Turn it closed (perpendicular to pipe) and open again to confirm it moves freely - exercise it once a year
- Check for drips at the valve body, especially at the stem where the handle attaches
- After operating it, confirm water pressure returns to normal - this confirms the valve opened fully
When to Call a Plumber
If a ball valve is leaking at the stem, dripping at a joint, or no longer stops water completely, replacement is straightforward for a plumber but requires turning off supply at the meter first. If your main shutoff is an old gate valve that sticks or fails to fully close, replacing it with a ball valve is a worthwhile upgrade that a plumber can do in a short visit.
