What It Is

PSI stands for pounds per square inch, the standard unit for measuring water pressure in a residential plumbing system. Household water pressure commonly runs between 40 and 80 PSI. Pressure below 40 PSI can produce weak flow at fixtures. Pressure consistently above 80 PSI may put stress on pipes, joints, and appliance inlet valves, potentially shortening their service life and increasing the likelihood of leaks developing over time.

What It Does

PSI is simply a measurement, not a physical component. It tells you how forcefully the water supply is pushing through your pipes at any given moment. That measurement determines whether faucets and showers deliver satisfying flow, whether appliances like dishwashers and washing machines fill correctly, and whether the pressure is high enough to cause damage.

Every fixture, valve, and appliance connected to your water supply is rated to handle a certain pressure range. A washing machine hose rated to 100 PSI exposed to 120 PSI of supply pressure will eventually burst. A toilet fill valve engineered to work at 60 PSI may chatter or leak at 95 PSI. Keeping pressure within the normal range protects everything downstream.

The municipal water supply delivers water at pressures that can vary throughout the day and by neighborhood. A pressure reducing valve (PRV) installed near the main shutoff brings that supply pressure down to a safe range for household use. Over time, a PRV can drift or fail, allowing pressure to creep upward without any visible warning until something gives.

Where It Is Located

You cannot see PSI directly - you measure it. A simple pressure gauge can be threaded onto any hose bib (outdoor spigot) or washing machine supply line in seconds. The gauge shows current static pressure in PSI. The best place to test is an outdoor hose bib at the front of the house, early in the morning before heavy water use begins.

How It Works

Water pressure comes from elevation and mechanical pumping at the municipal treatment plant or well system. The utility delivers water at a pressure high enough to reach upper floors of buildings across the service area. A pressure reducing valve at your home's main line reduces that incoming pressure to the 40-80 PSI range suited to residential plumbing.

Static pressure is what the gauge reads when no water is flowing. Dynamic pressure is slightly lower and refers to pressure while flow is occurring. Most pressure problems homeowners notice - weak showers, slow-filling tanks - show up as low dynamic pressure rather than low static pressure.

Common Problems or Signs of Failure

Can a Homeowner Check It?

Yes. A simple hose bib pressure gauge costs about $10 at any hardware store and threads onto any outdoor spigot without tools beyond hand-tightening. Turn the water on fully and read the gauge.

When to Call a Plumber

If your reading is consistently above 80 PSI, a plumber can inspect the pressure reducing valve and adjust or replace it. If pressure is below 40 PSI, a plumber can trace whether the PRV is set too low, whether a valve somewhere is partially closed, or whether the issue originates with the municipal supply. Pressure problems that affect only one area of the house often indicate a local restriction rather than a whole-house issue.
