What It Is
A fixture shutoff valve is a small valve installed on the water supply line directly serving a single plumbing fixture - most commonly a toilet, bathroom sink, kitchen sink, or appliance. It allows you to shut off water to that one fixture without interrupting water service to the rest of the house. These valves are often called angle stops because they typically make a 90-degree turn between the wall stub-out and the flexible supply line leading to the fixture. They are the first control point in any fixture-level water emergency.
What It Does
Fixture shutoffs give you local isolation capability for each fixture. When a toilet supply line starts spraying, you turn the valve clockwise behind the toilet - no need to run to the main shutoff. When a faucet needs a cartridge replaced, you close the two angle stops under the sink rather than cutting off water to the entire house.
In practice, many homeowners have never operated their fixture shutoffs and do not know where they all are. In an emergency - a supply line rupture, an overflowing tank, a leaking dishwasher connection - those extra seconds spent locating an unfamiliar valve while water flows freely make a difference. Knowing where your shutoffs are before anything goes wrong is one of the more useful things a homeowner can do.
Where It Is Located
Every toilet has one shutoff: on the wall or floor directly behind the base of the tank, typically a small oval-handled valve with a supply line running from it up to the tank's fill valve. Each sink has two: one for hot and one for cold, located under the sink in the cabinet, where the copper or PEX stubs come out of the wall or floor. Dishwashers typically have one shutoff under the kitchen sink on the hot water line. Washing machines have two shutoffs at the wall connections behind or beside the machine.
How It Works
Most fixture shutoffs are compression valves - they have a threaded stem with a rubber washer at the tip that is driven into a seat when the handle is turned clockwise. Modern installations sometimes use quarter-turn ball-style shutoffs at the fixture level, which are more reliable for long-term use because they do not rely on rubber compression. Both accomplish the same isolation function.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Slow drip at the stem when the valve is operated after years of disuse
- Valve does not fully stop flow when closed - internal washer is worn
- Handle is stiff and difficult to turn - mineral scale on the stem threads
- Supply line leaking at the connection to the valve body
- Valve body itself leaking at the connection to the wall stub-out
Can a Homeowner Check It?
- Walk through every bathroom, the kitchen, and the laundry area and locate every fixture shutoff valve
- Once a year, turn each one fully closed and then fully open to confirm they move freely
- Note any that are stiff or show corrosion - these should be replaced before they are needed in an emergency
- Make sure everyone in the household knows where the main shutoff is as a backup if a fixture shutoff fails
When to Call a Plumber
If a fixture shutoff is leaking, stuck, or will not close completely, replacement is the right move. A plumber can replace individual fixture shutoffs quickly - the work requires shutting off the main supply briefly, replacing the valve, and restoring service. It is worth doing proactively on older homes where the original compression valves have never been operated. Replacing a corroded shutoff during a planned repair visit is much easier than replacing it under emergency conditions.
