What It Is
A gate valve is a shutoff valve that uses a threaded stem to raise and lower a flat metal disc - the gate - into the water flow path. It is operated by a round wheel handle that requires multiple full turns to fully open or close. Gate valves were standard in residential plumbing through the mid-20th century and are still found in many older homes. They have been largely replaced by ball valves in new construction and modern repairs because of reliability problems that develop over time.
What It Does
A gate valve's primary purpose is the same as any shutoff: to stop water flow to a section of the plumbing system. When fully open, the gate retracts entirely from the flow path, producing minimal restriction - this is one technical advantage gate valves have over some other designs. When closed, the gate seats against the valve body to block flow.
In practice, gate valves have two significant drawbacks that make them less desirable than ball valves for residential shutoff applications. First, they must be either fully open or fully closed - using them partially open causes the gate to vibrate, which damages the seating surfaces over time. Second, because they are often left in the fully open position for years or decades without being operated, the stem packing deteriorates and the valve can seize when someone finally tries to use it in an emergency.
Where It Is Located
Gate valves are most often found as the main shutoff valve in homes built before the 1980s, typically on the supply line where it enters the basement. They may also be found on branch lines serving sections of the house or on older water heater connections. In many homes, the gate valve is the one component of the entire plumbing system most likely to fail at the worst moment.
How It Works
Turning the wheel handle clockwise threads the stem downward, pushing the gate disc into a seat inside the valve body. Turning counterclockwise raises the gate out of the flow path. The stem relies on packing - a compressed ring of material around the stem - to prevent water from leaking out around the stem as it moves. This packing dries out and loses elasticity when the valve sits unused, which is why old gate valves sometimes weep at the stem when finally operated after years of inactivity.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Valve handle is stiff or will not turn - stuck from years of disuse and mineral deposits
- Dripping or weeping at the stem when operated after long period of disuse
- Valve closes most of the way but still allows some flow - gate seats are worn
- Handle turns but water does not fully stop
- Visible corrosion on valve body, particularly at joints
Can a Homeowner Check It?
- Identify whether your main shutoff is a gate valve (round wheel handle) or ball valve (lever handle)
- If it is a gate valve, try operating it gently - turn clockwise a bit, then back to fully open
- If it is stiff, do not force it - forced operation on an old valve can break the stem or body
- Note whether the wheel spins freely without resistance - if it does, the stem may be stripped and the valve no longer functions
When to Call a Plumber
If your main shutoff is an old gate valve that sticks, does not fully close, or leaks at the stem, replacing it with a modern ball valve is worth doing before an emergency forces the issue. A plumber replaces it by shutting off water at the meter, swapping the valve, and restoring service - typically a quick job. It is far better to do this as a planned upgrade than to discover the valve fails when you need it most.
