What It Is
A water heater thermostat is a temperature-sensing switch that monitors the water inside the tank and controls the heating source. On electric heaters, there are two thermostats - an upper and a lower - each paired with its own heating element. On gas heaters, the thermostat is integrated into the gas control valve and controls the burner. When the water temperature drops below the set point, the thermostat activates heating; when the set temperature is reached, it shuts it off.
What It Does
The thermostat is the brains of the water heating cycle. Without it, the heater would either run continuously - overheating the water until the T&P relief valve opened - or never heat at all. The thermostat keeps the water temperature within a narrow band around the set point, typically cycling the heating element or burner on for several minutes at a time throughout the day as hot water is drawn out and replaced with cold.
Electric heaters have an upper and lower thermostat that work in coordination. The upper thermostat has priority: it calls for heat first after a large draw and also contains the high-limit safety cutoff, which shuts down both elements if the water reaches a dangerously high temperature. The lower thermostat manages the routine recovery cycle once the top of the tank is hot.
The recommended thermostat setting for residential water heaters is 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature is hot enough to deter bacterial growth (including Legionella) but low enough to reduce the risk of scalding at fixtures and to reduce standby heat loss.
Where It Is Located
On electric heaters, each thermostat is a flat, rectangular component mounted against the tank wall behind an access panel and held in place by a bracket. The upper thermostat is behind the upper access panel; the lower thermostat is behind the lower panel. On gas heaters, the thermostat dial is visible on the outside of the gas control valve - a box-shaped component at the base of the heater with a temperature adjustment knob.
How It Works
Electric water heater thermostats use a bimetal strip or sensing bulb that contacts the tank wall. As the water temperature on the other side of the tank wall changes, the sensor responds and opens or closes an electrical contact, completing or breaking the circuit to the heating element. The upper thermostat also includes a separate high-limit safety that trips manually (a red reset button) if the water exceeds about 170 degrees Fahrenheit.
Gas water heater thermostats work differently - the sensing probe extends into the tank water directly, and the thermostat mechanism controls a gas valve to modulate gas flow to the burner.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Water stays lukewarm - the thermostat may be set too low, or it may have failed in the open position
- Water is scalding hot - the thermostat has failed in the closed (always-on) position, or it is set too high
- No hot water at all - the high-limit safety may have tripped, or the thermostat has failed
- Heater runs constantly without reaching temperature - thermostat set point is unreachable due to element failure or thermostat calibration drift
- Water temperature inconsistent from day to day - early signs of thermostat wear
Can a Homeowner Check It?
The most accessible check on an electric heater is resetting the high-limit safety switch on the upper thermostat. Remove the upper access panel, pull back the insulation, and press the red button. This is safe to do and sometimes resolves a no-hot-water situation without any further repair.
- Verify the thermostat dial setting on a gas heater - confirm it is not set to "Vacation" or an unusually low position
- On electric heaters, press the red reset button behind the upper access panel if you have no hot water
- Check whether the water heater circuit breaker has tripped before opening any panels
- Notice whether the water is consistently the wrong temperature or inconsistently varying - this helps identify the issue
When to Call a Plumber
Call if resetting the high-limit switch does not restore hot water, if the water is consistently too hot or too cold, or if the high-limit switch trips repeatedly. A plumber can test both thermostats with a multimeter, replace the failed component, and confirm the system is heating correctly. On gas heaters, thermostat issues are often addressed as part of gas control valve service.
