What It Is
A water heater burner is the gas combustion assembly at the base of a gas-fired tank water heater that produces the flame used to heat the tank. When the thermostat signals that the water temperature has dropped below the set point, the gas control valve opens and gas flows to the burner, where the pilot flame (or electronic igniter) ignites it. The burner flame heats the tank bottom and the flue, and combustion gases exit through a draft hood at the top of the heater.
What It Does
The burner is the primary heat source in a gas water heater. Unlike electric heaters that use immersed heating elements, gas heaters heat water indirectly - the burner flame heats the steel tank bottom from below, and that heat conducts through the tank wall into the water above. Hot combustion gases also rise through a central flue tube inside the tank, transferring additional heat along the way before venting outside.
A typical residential gas water heater burner outputs between 30,000 and 40,000 BTU per hour. This higher heat rate compared to electric heaters gives gas units a faster first-hour recovery - the ability to reheat a depleted tank more quickly.
The burner assembly includes the burner head (the part where gas combustion actually occurs), the gas supply tube from the control valve, and on some units an orifice fitting that controls the gas flow rate. The entire assembly is accessible by removing the lower service panel.
Where It Is Located
The burner sits in the combustion chamber at the very base of the water heater, beneath the tank. It is accessed through a lower panel or by lifting a draft hood at the bottom. The pilot assembly sits beside or slightly in front of the main burner orifice. On most units, the burner and pilot are connected to the gas control valve through small copper or stainless steel tubing.
How It Works
When the gas control valve opens, gas flows through the supply tube to the burner orifice - a precisely sized hole that controls the gas flow rate. The gas mixes with air drawn in through the combustion air opening at the bottom of the heater. This air-gas mixture ignites at the burner ports and produces a flame pattern designed to heat the tank bottom evenly. The burner cycles on and off multiple times per day as the thermostat calls for heat throughout normal household hot water use.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Burner flame is yellow or orange rather than blue - incomplete combustion; could be a dirty burner, poor draft, or improper air-gas mixture
- Heater takes much longer than usual to recover - burner output reduced, possibly due to partial blockage of the burner orifice or ports
- Popping or delayed ignition sound when burner lights - gas has accumulated slightly before ignition, often due to a dirty pilot or ignition problem
- Burner will not stay lit during a heating cycle - could be gas supply issue, thermocouple problem, or gas valve fault
- Sooty or carbonized deposits visible on the burner - incomplete combustion over time
Can a Homeowner Check It?
You can safely observe the burner flame color through the viewport window or by removing the lower access panel (with the burner running). A healthy burner flame should be predominantly blue with possibly small yellow tips. Yellow or orange flames throughout indicate a combustion issue worth having inspected.
- Observe the flame color through the viewport - blue is correct; yellow/orange throughout indicates a problem
- Listen for the burner igniting cleanly - a soft whomp is normal; a loud bang or delayed ignition is not
- Note whether the heater is taking longer to recover than it used to
- Confirm the area around the heater has adequate ventilation - combustion air restrictions affect burner performance
When to Call a Plumber
Call if the burner flame is consistently yellow or orange, if the burner will not stay lit, if you hear abnormal sounds at ignition, or if hot water recovery has noticeably slowed. A plumber can inspect the burner assembly, clean the ports and orifice if needed, check draft conditions, and test whether the gas control valve is delivering the correct gas pressure. Burner problems are sometimes a symptom of a failing gas control valve rather than the burner itself.
