What It Is

Well water pressure is the force at which water is delivered from a private well system to household fixtures, measured in PSI. Unlike municipal water pressure maintained by a utility, well water pressure is generated and controlled entirely by the homeowner's pump, pressure tank, and pressure switch. Normal residential well pressure ranges from 40 to 60 PSI, set by the pressure switch cut-in and cut-out points.

What It Does

Adequate water pressure is what makes normal household water use possible - showering, filling appliances, running two fixtures simultaneously. The well pump creates the pressure, the pressure tank stores it, and the pressure switch regulates the cycle that keeps pressure within the target range. The result, in a properly functioning system, is water pressure at the tap that feels similar to municipal supply.

Where well pressure differs from municipal water is that it is entirely the homeowner's responsibility to maintain. A drop in well pressure means something in the pump-tank-switch system has changed - it is not something the utility will fix. Knowing the normal pressure range for your specific system and what each component does helps homeowners recognize problems early.

How It Works

When the well pump is running, it forces water into the pressure tank, compressing the air bladder inside. This stores potential energy - the compressed air will push water out when needed. When a fixture opens, water flows from the pressure tank at the current stored pressure. As the tank empties, pressure drops. When it reaches the cut-in point (say, 40 PSI), the pressure switch turns the pump on. The pump recharges the tank until pressure reaches the cut-out point (60 PSI), then the switch shuts off the pump. This cycle repeats continuously as water is used.

The pressure range at any given fixture is slightly lower than tank pressure due to pipe friction - longer pipe runs or smaller diameter pipes reduce pressure at the far end. This is why a home with adequate tank pressure may still have low pressure at a distant shower - the issue may be pipe-related rather than pump or tank related.

If the pressure gauge reads abnormally low, the pump is short-cycling, or there is a sudden complete loss of pressure, a plumber familiar with well systems can diagnose whether the issue is the pressure tank, switch, pump, or something else. Adjusting pressure switch settings or replacing a waterlogged tank are accessible repairs; pump issues require pulling the submersible unit from the well.
