What It Is
A well pressure switch is an electromechanical device that monitors water pressure in the well system and automatically turns the pump motor on when pressure drops to the cut-in setting and off when it reaches the cut-out setting. Common residential settings are 30/50 PSI or 40/60 PSI. The switch is the brain of the well pump control system - without it, the pump would not know when to run.
What It Does
Every time water is drawn from a fixture in a home with a private well, pressure in the system decreases. The pressure switch monitors this pressure constantly. When it drops to the cut-in pressure (say, 40 PSI), the switch closes its electrical contacts and sends power to the well pump. The pump runs, pushing water into the pressure tank and raising system pressure. When pressure reaches the cut-out point (say, 60 PSI), the switch opens its contacts, cutting power to the pump, which stops. This happens automatically every pump cycle, dozens of times per day.
Where It Is Located
The pressure switch is a small gray or silver box - roughly the size of a hockey puck - mounted on the pressure tank or on the water line near it. It connects electrically to the well pump circuit and has a port that senses water pressure directly from the line. A protective cover screws over the internal contacts. Many installations include a small pressure gauge nearby so the homeowner can see the current system pressure.
How It Works
Inside the pressure switch, a diaphragm responds to water pressure changes. As pressure drops, the diaphragm relaxes and spring tension closes the electrical contacts, completing the circuit to the pump. As pressure rises with the pump running, the diaphragm compresses against the spring until the contacts open at the cut-out pressure. The cut-in and cut-out pressures are set by adjusting springs inside the switch - typically done at installation and rarely changed unless system requirements change.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Pump does not turn on when pressure drops - contacts may be burned or corroded, or the switch has failed
- Pump runs continuously and never shuts off - cut-out contacts are stuck or the well cannot keep up with demand
- Pump chatters on and off rapidly - pressure switch contacts arcing or waterlogged pressure tank causing pressure to spike
- No water despite pump running - switch settings may be wrong, or pump is failing
- Visible corrosion or burning around the switch cover or wiring connections
Can a Homeowner Check It?
- Check the pressure gauge and note what pressure the pump turns on and off at - compare to the expected settings (30/50 or 40/60 PSI)
- Do not open the pressure switch cover while the pump circuit is energized - there are live 240V electrical contacts inside
- Check the circuit breaker for the well pump - a tripped breaker can mimic a switch failure
- If the pump short-cycles rapidly, the issue is likely a waterlogged pressure tank, not the switch itself - check the tank first
When to Call a Plumber
Pressure switch replacement is a low-cost repair but involves working near 240V electrical connections. A plumber or well service technician can test the switch, replace it if needed, and confirm the pressure settings are correct for the system. If the switch is replaced but problems continue, the underlying cause is usually the pressure tank or the pump itself.
