What It Is

Water pressure is the force per unit area that pushes water through supply pipes and out of fixtures, measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). Residential water pressure commonly falls between 45 and 80 PSI. Pressure below 40 PSI can make showers weak, slow the filling of tubs and washing machines, and may prevent some appliances from operating correctly. Pressure above 80 PSI can stress pipes, shorten the life of faucet washers and toilet fill valves, and contribute to water hammer.

What It Does

Water pressure is what moves water from the main supply, through the pipes, and out of every fixture. Without adequate pressure, water won't flow at usable rates. Too much pressure places continuous mechanical stress on every pipe fitting, valve seat, and appliance connection in the system.

Pressure also determines how effective fixtures feel in daily use. A shower at 50 PSI feels noticeably different from one at 30 PSI. Similarly, a washing machine that can't maintain the fill pressure its inlet valve requires may exhibit fill errors or extend wash cycles.

How It Works

Municipal water systems maintain pressure in distribution mains using pumping stations and elevated storage tanks. Pressure at the main can range from 60 to 100+ PSI depending on the neighborhood, time of day, and proximity to a storage tank. A pressure-reducing valve (PRV) at the home's main supply line steps this down to the household operating range.

On well systems, a pressure tank and pressure switch maintain pressure between two set points - typically 40/60 PSI or 30/50 PSI cut-in/cut-out. The pump runs when pressure drops to the lower set point and shuts off when the upper set point is reached.

Pressure varies dynamically throughout the day. Municipal pressure drops during peak usage periods (morning and evening). Within the home, opening multiple fixtures simultaneously reduces pressure at each one because the supply pipe has a maximum flow rate it can deliver.

When to Call a Plumber

Call a plumber if your pressure is consistently above 80 PSI (a plumber can assess whether PRV adjustment or replacement is warranted), if pressure is consistently below 40 PSI throughout the home, or if pressure has changed noticeably without explanation. A plumber can test pressure at multiple points, adjust or replace the PRV, and trace pressure loss to a specific cause - whether it's a partially closed valve, corroded pipe, or failing service line.
