What It Is

Water hammer is a hydraulic shockwave that travels through pipes when flowing water is suddenly stopped or redirected. The moving column of water has momentum, and when a valve closes quickly, that momentum converts to a pressure spike that causes a loud bang or thud. The formal term is hydraulic shock. Repeated water hammer can loosen pipe fittings, stress soldered joints, and damage appliance valves over time.

What It Does

Every time water hammer occurs, a pressure wave travels back from the closed valve toward the water source. In a rigid pipe system, this wave has nowhere to dissipate and reflects back and forth until friction reduces it. The banging sound is the pressure wave hitting pipe walls, fittings, and straps.

Modern appliances - dishwashers, washing machines, ice makers - use solenoid valves that open and close almost instantaneously. These fast-acting valves are a common source of water hammer in homes that didn't previously experience it after appliance upgrades.

How It Works

The intensity of water hammer depends on two factors: the velocity of the water flowing through the pipe, and how quickly the valve closes. Higher velocity means more momentum; faster closure means less time for the pressure to dissipate gradually. This is why high-pressure homes (over 80 psi) experience more severe water hammer than homes with pressure-reducing valves set to 50-60 psi.

Older homes sometimes had air chambers - capped vertical pipe sections near fixtures - that acted as cushions. Air compresses where water cannot, absorbing the shockwave. These chambers become waterlogged over time and need to be drained periodically to restore the air cushion.

When to Call a Plumber

Call a plumber if water hammer is severe, frequent, or has been occurring for years. A plumber can install water hammer arrestors near the offending fixtures, adjust the pressure-reducing valve to lower overall system pressure, or add proper pipe support to prevent transmitted vibration. Left unaddressed, repeated hydraulic shock accelerates wear on every joint in the supply system.
