What It Is

A thermocouple is a small safety sensor on a gas water heater consisting of two dissimilar metal wires joined at a tip that sits directly in the pilot flame. When that junction is heated, the dissimilar metals generate a small but measurable electrical voltage - typically 20 to 30 millivolts. That voltage is transmitted through a copper capillary line to the gas control valve, where it holds a safety solenoid open. If the pilot goes out, the thermocouple cools, the voltage drops to zero, and the solenoid closes automatically - cutting off gas flow to both the pilot and main burner.

What It Does

The thermocouple is a passive safety device with no moving parts and no power supply. Its only job is to confirm that the pilot flame is present before allowing gas to flow to the burner. This prevents the dangerous scenario of gas flowing into an enclosed combustion chamber with no ignition source present.

The thermocouple is one of the more commonly replaced parts on older gas water heaters. Service life varies — many last around 8 to 10 years, though some last considerably longer. When it begins to fail, it loses the ability to generate enough voltage to keep the solenoid open reliably - the pilot lights but will not stay lit once you release the gas control knob.

Some newer gas water heaters use a thermopile instead of a thermocouple. A thermopile is essentially multiple thermocouples wired in series, generating a higher voltage (commonly in the range of 500 to 750 millivolts, though this varies by model). This higher voltage can power the gas valve electronics and sometimes a small LED status indicator as well.

Where It Is Located

The thermocouple tip sits in the pilot flame inside the combustion chamber at the base of the water heater. The body of the sensor is a metal probe, and a copper capillary line runs from it back up to the gas control valve, where it threads into a fitting. You can usually see the copper line and probe when the lower access panel is removed.

How It Works

The thermoelectric effect - the basis of thermocouple operation - was discovered in the early 1800s. When two different metals are joined at a point and that junction is heated relative to the other end, a voltage is produced proportional to the temperature difference. In a water heater thermocouple, the junction in the pilot flame operates at roughly 800 to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, while the other end (at the gas valve) is at room temperature. The resulting voltage is small but sufficient to operate the solenoid valve mechanically.

Common Problems or Signs of Failure

Can a Homeowner Check It?

You can make a visual check by confirming the thermocouple tip is sitting squarely in the pilot flame - not bent to the side or positioned outside the flame envelope. You can also try the relighting procedure and see whether the pilot holds after releasing the knob. If it does not hold, a failed thermocouple is the most likely cause.

When to Call a Plumber

Thermocouple replacement is one of the most straightforward water heater repairs. A plumber can test the output voltage with a multimeter to confirm failure, then replace the component - typically in under an hour. If the pilot repeatedly fails to hold even after thermocouple replacement, the gas control valve itself may be failing. A plumber can assess whether the valve warrants replacement or whether it makes more sense to consider replacing the heater if it is already past its typical service life.
