What It Is
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) pipe is a rigid plastic pipe used primarily for drain, waste, and vent (DWV) lines in residential plumbing. It comes in white or cream color, in diameters from 1.5 inches (sink drains) to 4 inches (main drain lines). Sections are joined with solvent-weld fittings - primer and PVC cement chemically fuse the pipe and fitting into a single solid piece. PVC is not used for hot water supply lines - that role belongs to copper or PEX.
What It Does
PVC drain lines carry wastewater from every fixture - sinks, tubs, showers, toilets, washing machines - by gravity to the main sewer or septic line. The smooth interior surface of PVC resists the buildup of grease and debris better than cast iron, and it never rusts. PVC vent pipes extend from drain lines through the roof, allowing air into the drain system so water flows freely and sewer gases escape outside.
Where It Is Located
PVC drain and vent pipes run through walls, floors, and along basement ceilings. The main drain stack (typically 3 or 4 inches diameter) runs vertically from the basement through the roof. Branch lines (1.5 to 3 inches) connect individual fixtures to the stack. In newer homes, all visible drain piping in the basement is typically white PVC. In older homes, basement drain lines may be cast iron with PVC used only for newer additions or repairs.
How It Works
PVC drain pipes work by gravity. They are installed at a minimum slope (typically 1/4 inch per foot) toward the main drain. Wastewater and solids flow downhill by gravity alone. At every fixture, a P-trap holds a small amount of water to block sewer gases. Vent pipes provide air above the water column so a vacuum doesn't form and prevent draining.
Solvent-welded PVC joints are permanent and extremely strong when made correctly. They require clean, dry pipe surfaces, proper primer application, and full insertion of the fitting before the cement sets (which happens in seconds). A joint that wasn't pushed fully home before cement set is structurally weak and may leak under flow.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Leaking joints - usually caused by improper solvent-welding or physical damage
- Cracked pipe sections from physical impact or ground settlement
- Sagging horizontal runs - inadequate support allows drain lines to lose slope over time
- Clogs - PVC doesn't cause clogs but collects grease, hair, and debris at traps and fittings
- Noise - PVC drain pipes are louder than cast iron when water flows through them
Can a Homeowner Check It?
- Look at exposed PVC drain lines in the basement for cracks, joint gaps, or water staining below connections
- Check that horizontal drain runs maintain a consistent slope - a sagging section will pool debris
- Listen for drain gurgling at fixtures - can indicate a vent problem or partial clog
- Confirm P-traps under sinks are intact and not leaking at the slip-joint connections
When to Call a Plumber
Call a plumber for leaking PVC joints (solvent-welding is a specific skill requiring proper technique and materials), for drain lines with persistent clogs suggesting a deeper obstruction, or for vent line issues. Vent pipe problems require working from inside the wall or through the roof and are not typically DIY repairs.
