What It Is
A faucet aerator is a small threaded screen assembly that screws onto the tip of a faucet spout. It contains one or more fine mesh screens and a small restrictor disc that breaks the solid water stream into many tiny streams mixed with air. The result is a smooth, less splashy flow that uses less water per minute than a full, unrestricted stream. Aerators are a standard feature on virtually every household sink faucet and most bathroom faucets made in recent decades.
What It Does
The aerator's primary purpose is water conservation. By mixing air into the stream, it maintains the perception of good flow while actually delivering less water - typically 1.0 to 2.2 gallons per minute, compared to 3+ gallons per minute without one. Most people do not notice the difference in daily use.
A secondary benefit is splash reduction. The aerated stream hits the sink surface at lower velocity with more air in it, which greatly reduces the spray and mess that an unrestricted stream causes at normal faucet heights.
Aerators also catch sediment and debris before it reaches the sink - the screens trap particles that pass through the supply lines. In areas with hard water or older pipes, this debris collection can happen quickly, gradually restricting flow over months or years.
Where It Is Located
At the very tip of the faucet spout - the threaded end you aim water toward the drain. It usually screws on clockwise (from the outside perspective, with the aerator facing you). Some aerators are visible as a small chrome or plastic fitting at the spout tip; others are hidden inside the spout end and require a special aerator key to remove. Look for the small screen visible when you look up into the spout opening.
How It Works
Water enters the aerator body from the faucet spout under supply pressure. It passes through one or more mesh screens that break it into small streams, then through a perforated disc or flow restrictor that limits the total volume. Air drawn in from the sides of the aerator body mixes with the water streams. The combined air-and-water stream exits the aerator in a white, bubbly column that looks like more water than is actually flowing.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Faucet flow has become noticeably weaker over time - aerator screens are clogged with mineral scale or sediment
- Water sprays in multiple directions rather than a steady column - screen is partially blocked or damaged
- White or yellowish crust visible at the spout tip - mineral deposits from hard water
- Sudden reduction in flow after maintenance or new fixture installation - debris knocked loose is now blocking the aerator
Can a Homeowner Check It?
Yes - aerator cleaning or replacement is one of the most accessible homeowner tasks in plumbing maintenance.
- Unscrew the aerator by hand (counterclockwise from below the spout) - use a cloth or tape-wrapped pliers if tight
- Disassemble the screens and soak in white vinegar for 30-60 minutes to dissolve mineral scale
- Rinse thoroughly and reassemble in the same order the parts came apart
- If the screens are torn or the restrictor is cracked, replace the aerator - they are inexpensive and available at any hardware store
- Check the flow rate rating when replacing - kitchen faucets typically use 2.2 GPM, bathroom faucets 1.0-1.5 GPM
When to Call a Plumber
If cleaning the aerator restores flow, no plumber visit is needed. If flow is still reduced after the aerator is clean, the restriction is somewhere else in the supply line or the faucet cartridge. A plumber can trace whether the restriction is at the fixture shutoff valve, the supply line, the cartridge, or further upstream. Whole-house low pressure requires different investigation than flow reduction at a single faucet.
