What It Is
Biofilm is a sticky, slime-like coating of bacteria and organic matter that accumulates on the interior walls of drain pipes. It forms when bacteria attach to pipe surfaces and secrete a protective polysaccharide matrix, trapping soap residue, grease, hair, and organic debris within it. It is the primary cause of drain odors - the distinctive musty or sewage smell that comes from bathroom sink drains - and it contributes significantly to slow drainage over time.
What It Does
Biofilm coats the inner diameter of the drain pipe with a progressively thicker layer of organic material. As the layer grows, it reduces the effective diameter of the pipe and creates a rough surface that traps more hair, soap, and debris - accelerating the buildup further. The bacteria within the biofilm produce sulfur compounds and other byproducts that account for the odor.
Biofilm is particularly common in bathroom sink drain pipes and the p-trap beneath the sink, where a mix of soap, toothpaste, skin cells, and water creates an ideal growth environment. In kitchen lines, cooking grease plays a similar role - coating the pipe walls and trapping other materials.
Where It Is Located
Biofilm builds up wherever water carrying organic material contacts a pipe wall and flow slows enough for bacteria to colonize. It is most concentrated in the p-trap and the short section of drain pipe between the fixture and the larger stack - the areas with the most exposure to sink and shower discharge. It can also accumulate in floor drains that drain slowly or irregularly.
How It Works
Bacteria naturally present in water and drain waste attach to the pipe surface and begin secreting a matrix that anchors them in place and protects them from being flushed away. This matrix also makes biofilm resistant to chemical drain cleaners - the cleaner flows through the center of the pipe without penetrating the biofilm layer fully. Over time, the colony grows thicker and more difficult to remove without mechanical cleaning.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Persistent odor from a drain even when the fixture is clean
- Slow-draining bathroom sink that isn't obviously clogged with hair
- Dark, gelatinous residue visible on the drain strainer or stopper
- Shower or tub drain that smells worse in warm, humid conditions
- Repeated slow drainage after snaking (if the snake cleared a hair clog but didn't address the biofilm coating)
Can a Homeowner Check It?
- Pull out the drain stopper or strainer and look for dark, slippery buildup on the stopper stem and the inside of the drain opening - that's biofilm.
- Hot water flushing - running the hottest tap water down the drain for several minutes - can help soften and partially remove light biofilm buildup.
- Enzymatic drain cleaners (not chemical drain openers) work by digesting the organic material in biofilm. They are safer for pipes than chemical cleaners and can be moderately effective for maintenance.
- For persistent odor or significant slowing, mechanical cleaning with a drain snake or hydro jetting is more effective than any chemical treatment.
When to Call a Plumber
If enzymatic treatments and hot flushing haven't resolved the odor or the slow drain within a couple of weeks, a plumber can snake the drain or hydro jet the line to physically remove the biofilm coating. Hydro jetting is particularly effective because the high-pressure water blasts the biofilm off the pipe walls, where a snake mainly breaks through a clog without cleaning the walls.
