What It Is

A water softener is a whole-house treatment system that removes calcium and magnesium - the minerals that cause water hardness - through an ion exchange process. Hard water passes through a tank of resin beads that trade hardness minerals for sodium ions. The resin is periodically recharged with salt water in a regeneration cycle, restoring its exchange capacity. Northeast Ohio groundwater is typically moderately to very hard, making softeners common in the region.

What It Does

Hard water is not a safety issue, but it creates real problems in a home over time. The calcium and magnesium dissolved in hard water precipitate out as scale when the water is heated, building up inside water heaters, dishwashers, coffee makers, and pipes. Scale insulates heat exchanger surfaces, reducing efficiency and shortening equipment life. Hard water also reduces the lathering effectiveness of soaps and detergents, leaves film and spots on dishes and fixtures, and makes laundry feel stiff.

A water softener removes these minerals before the water reaches any fixtures or appliances, so scale does not form, soaps work more effectively, and fixtures stay cleaner. The water leaving the softener contains slightly more sodium, but at levels that are typically not significant for most people.

Where It Is Located

A water softener is installed on the main cold water supply line inside the house, typically in the basement, utility room, or crawl space - after the pressure tank in a well system, or after the water meter on a municipal supply. It consists of two tanks: the mineral tank (containing the resin bed) and the brine tank (holding salt pellets and the salt water used for regeneration). Both are usually positioned near a floor drain since the regeneration cycle discharges brine water.

How It Works

During normal operation, all household water passes through the mineral tank. The resin beads inside have a strong affinity for calcium and magnesium ions - they pull those ions out of the water and release sodium ions in exchange. This is the ion exchange process. The water that exits the softener has had its hardness minerals replaced with sodium, making it soft.

Over time, the resin beads become saturated with calcium and magnesium and can no longer exchange effectively. At programmed intervals (or when a flow meter triggers it), the softener enters a regeneration cycle. Concentrated brine from the salt tank flushes through the resin bed, and the high sodium concentration in the brine forces the hardness minerals back off the beads and down the drain. The resin is then rinsed and returned to service.

When to Call a Plumber

A plumber can install a new water softener, service a failing control valve, clean a fouled resin bed, or replace a unit that has reached the end of its service life. If the unit has not been properly maintained and the resin is severely fouled with iron or other contaminants, resin replacement or a new unit may be more practical than attempting to restore it. A plumber can also test your water and recommend the right softener size and type for your household.
