What It Is
A sediment filter is a physical filtration device installed on a water supply line that traps particles - sand, grit, rust, silt, and other suspended solids - before they reach fixtures, appliances, or downstream treatment equipment. Sediment filters use a porous cartridge rated by micron size; smaller micron ratings capture finer particles. The filter does not remove dissolved chemicals or minerals, only physical particles in suspension. They are common in well water systems and older homes with aging supply pipes.
What It Does
Particles in water supply lines cause cumulative damage to equipment. Grit and sand wear down pump impellers, clog solenoid valves in appliances, score the seats in faucets and shut-off valves, and shorten the life of reverse osmosis membranes and softener resin. A sediment filter provides a barrier that catches this material before it distributes through the entire plumbing system.
In well water systems, sediment is a normal concern. Wells that are drawing down toward the pump level will begin pulling fine particles from the aquifer bottom. After a pump replacement or any significant disturbance to the well, sediment loads temporarily increase. A sediment filter protects the pressure tank, water softener, and all downstream plumbing from this material. In municipal water systems, rust and pipe scale from old infrastructure can also make sediment filtration worthwhile.
Where It Is Located
In a well system, the sediment filter is installed on the water supply line after the pressure tank - typically where the line enters the living space or utility area. It needs to be accessible for cartridge replacement. In municipal systems, the filter is usually placed on the main supply line where it enters the house, before any branching to water-using appliances. Most whole-house sediment filter housings are clear or translucent so the condition of the cartridge can be checked without opening the housing.
How It Works
Water flows through the filter housing and passes through a cylindrical cartridge made of spun polypropylene, pleated polyester, or similar filter media. The media's pore structure traps particles at or above the rated micron size while allowing water to flow through. Common whole-house cartridge ratings range from 5 microns (fine) to 50 microns (coarse). As particles accumulate on the cartridge surface, flow restriction gradually increases - this pressure drop across the filter is what signals that a cartridge change is needed. When flow rate drops noticeably or a pressure differential gauge shows a significant drop, the cartridge should be replaced.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Reduced water flow throughout the house - clogged filter cartridge restricting flow; most common problem and simplest fix
- Discolored water or gritty taste - filter cartridge has failed structurally or bypass valve is open
- Rust-colored water - iron particles being trapped by the filter; inspect cartridge condition and consider a more frequent replacement schedule
- Sediment reaching fixtures after the filter - cartridge micron rating may be too coarse for the particle size present in the supply
Can a Homeowner Check It?
- Inspect the filter housing visually - a dark or brown cartridge visible through the transparent housing needs replacement
- Check flow at fixtures - a noticeable drop in flow house-wide often indicates the filter cartridge is clogged
- Replace cartridges on a regular schedule - every 3 to 6 months is typical, though sediment-heavy well water may require more frequent changes
- Turn the bypass valve to service the filter without shutting off the main water supply to the house
When to Call a Plumber
Initial installation of a whole-house sediment filter requires cutting into the main supply line and adding a filter housing with shut-off valves and a bypass - straightforward work for a plumber, but more involved than a DIY project for most homeowners. If heavy sediment from a well is persistently clogging filters faster than expected, a plumber can assess whether the well pump is drawing sediment and whether a well screen cleaning or pump repositioning is needed to address the source.
