What It Is
Trenchless sewer repair is a category of sewer line rehabilitation methods that fix or replace damaged pipes without excavating a trench across the yard. The two most common techniques are pipe lining - inserting a new liner inside the old pipe - and pipe bursting - pulling a new pipe through while fracturing the old one outward. Both require only small access pits rather than tearing up a full excavation path.
What It Does
Traditional sewer repair means digging a trench several feet deep along the entire length of the damaged pipe - often across the front yard, under a driveway, or through a sidewalk. Trenchless repair eliminates most of that excavation. A small pit is dug at each end of the damaged section, and the repair is performed from those access points without disturbing the ground in between.
The two trenchless methods serve slightly different situations. Pipe lining (also called CIPP lining) works best when the pipe is cracked or deteriorated but still largely intact in its original position. Pipe bursting works when the old pipe needs to be replaced entirely - the bursting head cracks the old pipe outward while pulling new pipe into the same path.
Where It Is Located
Trenchless repair is used on underground sewer lines - the section running from the house foundation to the municipal connection at the street. It can also be applied to other buried lines, including sections under driveways or landscaping where traditional excavation would be particularly disruptive.
How It Works
Pipe lining: A flexible liner saturated with resin is pulled or inverted into the existing pipe. An inflatable bladder holds the liner against the pipe walls while the resin cures. Once hardened, the liner forms a structurally independent pipe inside the old one. The result is essentially a new smooth pipe inside the old pipe. This method is slightly smaller in diameter than the original pipe but flows well because the surface is smooth rather than deteriorated.
Pipe bursting: A hydraulic bursting head is pulled through the old pipe from one access pit to another. The head has a larger diameter than the old pipe, so as it travels through, it fractures the old pipe outward into the surrounding soil. The new pipe - typically HDPE - is pulled in behind the bursting head to fill the space. This method fully replaces the old pipe rather than lining it.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
Trenchless repair is typically the solution when a camera inspection finds:
- Cracked or fractured pipe sections
- Offset or separated joints that have allowed soil intrusion
- Significant root intrusion with structural damage to the pipe
- Collapsed pipe sections
- Corroded cast iron or deteriorated clay tile that is no longer structurally sound
Can a Homeowner Check It?
- You can ask specifically about trenchless options when getting a sewer repair estimate - not every contractor offers both trenchless and traditional methods.
- A camera inspection report from the plumber should show the specific type of pipe damage. That information determines whether pipe lining or pipe bursting is appropriate.
- Trenchless repair is generally not applicable to sections where the pipe has completely collapsed, or where severe offset has occurred - those usually require excavation.

If a camera inspection has identified cracked or deteriorated sewer pipe and you want to explore your repair options, ask specifically about trenchless methods. Get a comparison of cost and suitability for your specific pipe condition. In some cases excavation is still the better choice - but trenchless is worth understanding before a decision is made.
