What It Is
The main sewer line (also called the lateral or house sewer) is the large underground pipe that receives all wastewater from every drain, toilet, sink, and appliance in a home and carries it to the municipal sewer system or the home's septic tank. It is typically 4 to 6 inches in diameter, runs from the foundation or basement of the house, and slopes downward under the yard to the connection at the property line or street. Because every fixture in the house drains into the main sewer line, a blockage or failure in this single pipe affects the entire home's drain system at once.
What It Does
The main sewer line carries the combined discharge from all indoor plumbing - gray water from sinks, showers, and appliances, and black water from toilets - out of the home by gravity flow to the municipal system or septic tank. There are no pumps involved in most residential installations; the continuous downward slope of the pipe provides the gravity head that moves waste out of the home.
The main sewer line is the lowest point of the home's drain system, downstream of every branch drain and soil stack. This means it is also the point at which a blockage has the most severe impact: a fully blocked main sewer line means no water can drain anywhere in the house - toilets, sinks, showers, and washing machines all back up.
Many municipalities require a sewer cleanout - an accessible access point - somewhere along the main sewer line to allow cleaning without excavation. Where a cleanout does not exist, older homes sometimes require a cleanout to be installed before a sewer camera inspection or hydro-jetting service can be performed efficiently.
Where It Is Located
The main sewer line typically exits the house through the foundation wall in the basement or crawl space, or below the slab in slab-on-grade construction. It then runs underground through the yard - usually in a straight line from the house to the street or to a septic tank - at a depth that varies from 2 to 6 feet depending on climate and local practice. The connection to the municipal sewer is typically at or near the property line. The homeowner is responsible for the section from the house to the connection point; the municipality owns the rest.
How It Works
Gravity does the work. The main sewer line is installed at a continuous slope of approximately 1/4 inch per foot toward the municipal system. Waste and wastewater flow downhill through the pipe without mechanical assistance. The pipe materials in older homes are typically cast iron, clay tile (vitrified clay pipe or "VCP"), or Orangeburg (a tar-based fiber pipe from the mid-20th century); newer homes typically use PVC. The pipe connects to the city sewer at the property line through a wye fitting or directly into the manhole or tap point the utility designates.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Multiple drains backing up simultaneously - the most definitive sign of a main sewer line blockage
- Sewage backing up into the lowest drains in the house (basement floor drain, first-floor toilet) - waste has nowhere to go
- Gurgling from multiple fixtures when any drain is used - partial main line blockage displacing air back through other traps
- Tree root infiltration - roots are drawn to moisture and nutrients in sewer lines and are the leading cause of main sewer problems in established neighborhoods
- Slow drains throughout the whole house that cannot be attributed to any individual fixture - partial main line obstruction
- Sinkholes, unusually lush grass, or foul odors in the yard above the sewer line - a broken or leaking line below grade
- Very old pipe materials (clay tile, Orangeburg) that are past their service life and prone to cracking and joint failure
Stop using water immediately if sewage is backing up into the house. Continuing to run water will cause the backup to worsen and can result in raw sewage flooding the basement or lowest-level fixtures. Call a plumber right away.
Can a Homeowner Check It?
A homeowner can observe symptoms but cannot directly inspect or clear the main sewer line without professional equipment. Camera inspection requires a drain camera, and clearing a tree-root blockage requires a mechanical snake or hydro-jet machine. What a homeowner can do:
- Determine whether the problem is the main line or a branch line - if only one fixture is slow or backed up, it is likely a branch line; if multiple fixtures are affected, it is likely the main
- Locate the sewer cleanout - typically a capped pipe in the yard, basement, or near the foundation - and point it out to the plumber
- Note when the problem started and what preceded it - heavy rainfall, tree work in the yard, or flushing inappropriate items can provide clues
- Avoid using any water until a plumber has cleared the blockage if sewage is actively backing up
When to Call a Plumber
Call immediately if sewage is backing up into the house. For slower symptoms - multiple drains sluggish, gurgling throughout - call as soon as possible but the emergency is less acute. A plumber will typically start with a sewer camera inspection to see what is causing the blockage (roots, grease buildup, pipe collapse, offset joints), then recommend the appropriate solution: mechanical snaking, hydro-jetting, spot repair, or full line replacement. For older homes with clay or Orangeburg pipe, the camera inspection is especially important because the pipe condition may dictate the repair method.
