What It Is
A toilet float is a buoyant device inside the tank that rides up and down with the water level. Its position tells the fill valve when to stop filling. As the tank refills after a flush, the float rises. When it reaches the set point, it mechanically closes the fill valve. In older ballcock-style assemblies the float was a hollow ball on a long metal arm. In modern toilets it is a cup or cylinder built into the fill valve body that adjusts up or down to set the desired water level.
What It Does
The float provides the fill valve's feedback signal. Without a float, the fill valve would run continuously. With it, the fill cycle stops automatically once the tank reaches the correct level. The water level in the tank - set by the float position - directly determines how much water is available for each flush. If the float is set too low, there is not enough water for a complete flush. Too high, and water overflows into the overflow tube and runs into the bowl continuously.
In older ball-float designs, the metal arm could be bent to adjust the water level - bending it downward lowered the shutoff point and reduced water per flush. Modern fill valves use a clip or screw adjustment on the float cup itself rather than bending an arm.
Where It Is Located
Inside the tank. In older ballcock toilets, the float is the round ball on the end of a horizontal arm that spans the tank. You can see it clearly when you lift the lid - it should be sitting above the water surface. In modern toilets, the float is part of the fill valve assembly itself and rides on the fill valve shaft on the left side of the tank. If you push the float down manually and the fill valve opens, you have confirmed the float is controlling the valve.
How It Works
The float works on simple buoyancy. As water level rises, the float rises. When it reaches the cutoff point, it physically closes the fill valve by either pushing against a diaphragm or moving a lever. When the tank is flushed and water level drops rapidly, the float falls with it, opening the fill valve and allowing refill to begin.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Toilet runs continuously - float is set too high and water overflows into overflow tube
- Water level in tank noticeably low - float is set too low, reducing flush power
- Waterlogged ball float on old ballcock design - hollow ball has developed a crack and filled with water, no longer buoyant
- Float cup stuck on fill valve shaft - debris or mineral scale preventing smooth movement
- Fill valve opens and closes repeatedly in short cycles - float is oscillating at the cutoff point
Can a Homeowner Check It?
- Lift the tank lid and locate the float - in old designs it is the ball on an arm; in modern designs it is a cup on the fill valve shaft
- Check that the water line is about 1 inch below the top of the overflow tube - if it is at or above the tube, lower the float
- On a ball float design, check whether the ball floats freely or sits in the water - a waterlogged ball needs replacing
- On modern fill valves, the adjustment is usually a twist or clip on the shaft - most are adjustable without tools
When to Call a Plumber
Float adjustment and replacement is accessible DIY work. If adjusting the float does not resolve the running toilet, the fill valve itself may be worn and need replacement. If the tank continues running after both the flapper and fill valve are replaced, a plumber can assess whether the issue is with the overflow tube height or another component.
