What It Is
A soil stack is the main vertical drain pipe inside a house that carries waste from toilets and all other fixtures down to the house drain and out to the sewer. It runs vertically through an interior wall from the basement to the roof, where it extends above the roofline as a vent. All branch drains from individual fixtures connect to it at various floor levels, making it the central artery of the home's drain system.
What It Does
The soil stack receives the output of every drain in the house. Toilet waste, sink drainage, tub and shower water, washing machine discharge - it all flows into the soil stack and drops by gravity to the house drain at the base of the stack. From there it exits through the foundation into the underground sewer line.
The portion of the stack above the highest branch drain connection carries no waste - it functions purely as a vent, allowing air into the drain system to equalize pressure. That's why the pipe extends above the roof rather than ending inside the attic.
In older homes built before the 1970s, soil stacks are commonly cast iron - a heavy, durable material that is effective but eventually corrodes from the inside. Cast iron stacks in older homes can develop internal scale buildup and pinhole leaks as they age.
Where It Is Located
The soil stack runs inside an interior wall - usually a thicker wall than the surrounding framing, built specifically to accommodate the pipe diameter (typically 3-4 inches). You can often identify the wall location by the vent pipe cap visible on the roof above. In the basement, the soil stack connects to the house drain, which runs to the foundation and the sewer cleanout.
How It Works
Waste enters the stack from branch drains and falls straight down by gravity. The large diameter - 3-4 inches for the main stack - provides enough capacity to handle simultaneous drainage from multiple fixtures. The vertical free-fall of waste generates momentum, but it also creates pressure changes that could siphon trap water if the top of the stack weren't open to the atmosphere.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Drains backing up throughout the house when the main stack is blocked at or below the lowest branch connection
- Slow drainage throughout multiple floors when the stack has significant internal scale or partial blockage
- Gurgling from multiple fixtures simultaneously - air movement problem in the stack
- Leaking or weeping at cast iron stack joints in older homes
- A blocked vent at the roof causing slow drains and gurgling throughout the house
Can a Homeowner Check It?
- Check the vent cap on the roof if you can safely access it - birds and debris can block it, causing whole-house drain problems.
- If all drains in the house are draining slowly or multiple fixtures are gurgling, that points to the soil stack rather than individual fixture issues.
- Look in the basement around the base of the stack for any moisture, staining, or rust streaks on cast iron - these indicate a leak that needs attention.
When to Call a Plumber
Call if drainage problems affect multiple fixtures throughout the house, if there is visible leaking or moisture at stack joints, or if the stack vent is blocked and you cannot safely access the roof to clear it. A plumber can snake the stack from the cleanout or inspect it with a camera to diagnose scale, blockage, or damage.
