What It Is
Rough-in plumbing is the first phase of plumbing installation in new construction or a major renovation - done while walls are open and before drywall goes up. During rough-in, a plumber runs all supply lines, drain lines, and vent pipes through the wall framing, floor joists, and under-slab areas, terminating each run at stub-outs positioned for every future fixture. The result is a complete plumbing skeleton, ready for fixtures to be connected once finishing work is done.
What It Does
Rough-in work establishes every connection point that the finished plumbing system will use. Supply stubs provide hot and cold water at the correct wall locations for sinks, showers, tubs, toilets, and appliances. Drain and vent stubs terminate at the proper heights and positions so that fixture traps can be connected when the finish work happens.
Getting rough-in dimensions right matters. A toilet, for example, requires its drain stub-out - the flange connection in the floor - to be at a specific distance from the finished wall. The standard is 12 inches from the finished wall face to the center of the drain. If that measurement is off, the toilet will not fit correctly against the wall. Every fixture has similar dimensional requirements.
The rough-in phase is also where drain slopes are set. Drain pipes must slope toward the sewer at roughly 1/4 inch per foot to move waste by gravity. If that slope is wrong during rough-in, the drain will either run too slowly or drain waste too fast without carrying solids - both cause problems that are expensive to fix after walls are closed.
How It Works
A plumber works from the building plans or homeowner's layout to map every fixture location. Supply lines are run from the main or from a manifold location. Drain lines are run to the main drain stack, which connects to the sewer or septic. Vent pipes run from each drain trap up through the roof to allow air into the drain system, preventing siphoning of trap water.
After rough-in is complete but before walls close, the work is inspected by the local building authority. The inspector checks that drain slopes are correct, that venting meets code, and that supply lines are properly secured. This inspection happens before drywall so that corrections can be made without destroying finished walls.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Toilet stub-out placed at wrong distance from wall - toilet does not sit flush
- Drain slope too shallow - slow drains from day one
- Missing or undersized vent - gurgling drains or sewer gas smell indoors
- Supply lines not strapped - pipes rattle or bang when water runs (water hammer)
- Incorrect fixture heights - shutoff valves end up behind finished walls
Can a Homeowner Check It?
During an active renovation where walls are open, a homeowner can observe a few things:
- Confirm the toilet flange stub-out is at 12 inches from the rough wall (add drywall thickness to get finished measurement)
- Look at drain runs and visually confirm they slope downward toward the sewer - they should not be level or running uphill
- Confirm vent pipes are present above each fixture drain and routed toward the roof
- Check that supply lines are secured to framing and have shutoff valve stub-outs where needed
When to Call a Plumber
Rough-in plumbing requires permits and inspections in most jurisdictions, so it is plumber work rather than DIY territory. If you are building an addition, finishing a basement, or doing a bathroom gut-renovation, a licensed plumber handles the rough-in phase and coordinates the inspection. If you are buying a home with an unfinished space, it is worth having the rough-in work reviewed before you plan your finish layout around it - correcting a misplaced drain stub-out after the fact is far more disruptive than catching it early.
