What It Is
A drain field (also called a leach field or soil absorption field) is the second stage of a septic system, where liquid effluent from the septic tank slowly seeps through perforated pipes into gravel-filled trenches and then into the surrounding soil. Soil microorganisms complete the treatment of the wastewater before it reaches groundwater. A failing drain field typically requires full replacement and is the most expensive septic repair.
What It Does
After the septic tank separates solids from liquids, the partially treated liquid - effluent - flows out to the drain field. The field's job is final treatment: distributing the effluent evenly across a large soil area so microorganisms in the soil can remove pathogens, nutrients, and remaining organic material before the water percolates down to groundwater or is absorbed by plant roots.
The drain field must handle the daily water use of the household over the life of the system - typically 20 to 30 years or more with proper maintenance. Overloading the field with excessive water use, allowing solids to escape the tank due to lack of pumping, or compacting the soil by driving over it can all cause the field to fail prematurely.
Where It Is Located
The drain field is a subsurface system buried in the yard, typically 50 to 100 feet or more from the house, downslope from the septic tank. It consists of a network of perforated distribution pipes laid in gravel-filled trenches, typically 18 to 36 inches deep and several hundred to over a thousand square feet in total area depending on household size and soil type. The field is usually in a relatively flat, open area free of trees (tree roots can damage distribution pipes).
How It Works
Effluent exits the septic tank through the outlet baffle and flows by gravity to a distribution box or directly into the drain field trenches. The perforated pipes release the liquid slowly across the length of each trench. From the pipes, the liquid seeps down through a layer of gravel into the native soil below, where it is filtered and treated as it moves through soil particles and encounters soil bacteria. The soil must be permeable enough to absorb the effluent but not so fast-draining that treatment is incomplete before the water reaches groundwater.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Soggy, wet ground or standing water in the yard over the drain field area
- Unusually green, lush grass growing over the field compared to surrounding areas
- Sewage odors near the drain field, especially after heavy rain or heavy water use
- Slow drains or sewage backups inside the house when the septic tank is not full
- Gurgling sounds in drains with no other explanation
Can a Homeowner Check It?
- Walk the drain field area periodically and note any wet spots, odors, or unusually green patches of grass
- Keep records of septic tank pumping - a neglected tank sends solids to the field and causes premature failure
- Avoid parking or driving heavy vehicles over the drain field - soil compaction kills the absorption capacity
- Do not plant trees or shrubs within 30 feet of the drain field - roots will infiltrate and clog the pipes
- Spread water use through the day and week rather than doing large amounts of laundry all at once
When to Call a Plumber
Signs of drain field problems - wet spots in the yard, sewage odors outside, slow drains - warrant a professional inspection. A plumber or septic contractor can determine whether the problem is a tank that needs pumping, a failed baffle, or actual drain field failure. Drain field rehabilitation or replacement is specialized work requiring permits and soil evaluation; it is not a DIY project.
