What It Is
Backflow is the unintended reversal of water flow in a plumbing system - water moving backward from a potentially contaminated source into the clean water supply. It happens when pressure drops on the supply side (back-siphonage) or rises on the outlet side (backpressure), creating conditions that pull or push water the wrong direction through pipes or fixtures.
What It Does
Under normal conditions, water moves in one direction: from the municipal main or well into your home and out through fixtures. Backflow breaks that one-way flow. When it occurs, whatever was at the outlet end of the pipe - fertilizer solution from a garden hose submerged in a bucket, chemicals from an irrigation system, or even dirty water from a submerged hose bibb - can be pulled back into the potable water lines.
This is not a theoretical risk. Documented backflow incidents have introduced pesticides, pool chemicals, and sewage into residential and municipal water supplies. Most plumbing codes require backflow prevention devices at points where the potable supply connects to non-potable sources, precisely because the consequence of backflow is contaminated drinking water.
How It Works
Backflow through back-siphonage works like drinking through a straw: a drop in supply pressure creates suction that pulls liquid back through the pipe. This can happen during a water main break, heavy firefighting demand, or any event that causes municipal pressure to drop significantly below normal. If a garden hose is submerged in a swimming pool or a chemical sprayer tank at that moment, back-siphonage can draw that liquid into the house supply.
Backflow through backpressure happens when a downstream system is pressurized above supply pressure - for example, a boiler loop or an elevated tank. That elevated pressure pushes water backward into the supply line. Industrial and commercial sites are more common sources of backpressure backflow, but it can occur in residential settings with certain heating systems or non-standard plumbing configurations.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Sudden change in water taste, odor, or color after a pressure event
- Discolored water at taps following a nearby water main break or repair
- Water that smells like chemicals, fertilizer, or sewage
- Cloudy or murky water that was previously clear
- Neighbors reporting similar water quality issues at the same time
Can a Homeowner Check It?
- Check that all outdoor hose bibbs have a vacuum breaker cap or built-in anti-siphon device
- Make sure garden hoses are never left submerged in pools, buckets, or chemical containers
- Confirm the irrigation system has a backflow preventer installed - often a separate device near where the irrigation line branches off
- Look for a backflow preventer assembly on the main water service line entering the home; in newer construction this is often required
- If you suspect backflow contamination, stop using the water immediately and contact your water utility
When to Call a Plumber
If you notice a sudden change in water quality following a pressure drop or nearby water main work, stop using the water and contact your utility first. A plumber is needed to install or test backflow prevention devices, and in many municipalities a licensed plumber is the only person permitted to certify that backflow assemblies are functioning correctly. If your irrigation system lacks a compliant backflow preventer, that is also a job for a plumber - it is not a code-optional device.
