What It Is
A backflow preventer is a mechanical device installed in a plumbing line to stop contaminated water from flowing backward into the potable water supply. It uses check valves, air gaps, or pressure differentials to enforce one-way water movement, protecting drinking water from cross-contamination at irrigation systems, boiler connections, and other risk points where non-potable water could contact the supply.
What It Does
A backflow preventer acts as a one-way gate in the plumbing system. Water can pass through in the normal direction (from the supply toward the outlet) but cannot reverse course. This is critical at any point where the potable water supply connects to a system that might introduce contaminants - an irrigation system filled with fertilizer, a boiler loop containing corrosion inhibitors, or a fire suppression system treated with chemicals.
Without a backflow preventer at these connection points, a pressure drop in the municipal supply - from a water main break, heavy firefighting demand, or a pressure test - could create siphoning conditions that draw contaminated water backward into the drinking water lines. The backflow preventer interrupts that siphon before it can happen.
Where It Is Located
Backflow preventers are installed at the point where a non-potable system branches off the potable water supply. For irrigation systems, the device typically sits just above ground near the connection between the house supply and the sprinkler lines - often in a covered box near the foundation or utility area. For whole-property protection, a backflow preventer may be installed on the main water service line where it enters the building.
How It Works
There are several types of backflow preventers, each suited to different risk levels. A double check valve assembly (DCA) uses two spring-loaded check valves in series - water pressure opens them in the forward direction, but any backpressure or back-siphonage closes them. A reduced pressure zone (RPZ) device adds a relief valve between the two check valves that opens and drains to atmosphere if pressure between the checks drops below supply pressure, providing a visible indication of failure and preventing any backflow event from reaching the supply. Simpler devices like atmospheric vacuum breakers work on smaller applications such as hose bibbs.
Common Problems or Signs of Failure
- Continuous dripping from the relief valve on an RPZ device (the relief valve should only open during a backflow event, not continuously)
- Water flowing backward through the assembly during a test
- Visible corrosion, mineral deposits, or physical damage to the device body
- Device fails annual certification test
- Drop in downstream pressure with no explanation
Can a Homeowner Check It?
- Visually inspect the device for leaks, corrosion, or physical damage
- Check that the device is not buried, submerged, or covered in a way that prevents inspection
- Look for any dripping from the relief port - this indicates a problem with the device
- Confirm the shutoff valves on either side of the assembly are in the open position during the irrigation season
When to Call a Plumber
Backflow preventer installation must be done by a licensed plumber in most jurisdictions, and many municipalities require annual testing by a certified backflow tester. If your RPZ device is dripping continuously, fails a test, or you are not sure whether your irrigation or fire suppression system has one installed, a plumber can evaluate the situation and install a code-compliant device. Annual testing is not optional in most water districts - failing to have it done can result in service interruption.
